Mark Cavendish Proud To Win Sports Personality Of The Year For Cycling

Mark Cavendish said winning BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2011 is a victory for his beloved sport of cycling.

Here is some of his acceptance speech…

“Thank you to everyone at home who has voted. This is a landmark in cycling and I take this on behalf of cycling.”

“It makes me incredibly happy and so proud that I can play a part in making cycling a mainstream sport.”

“Its incredible to see, its incredible to be part of that, and see the amount of people out riding bikes to work commuting and doing it as a hobby.”

“I see a lot of people out and about riding bikes and it always makes me smile every time I see a family or a child on a bike.”

Join the LCAG for a showing of short films about cycling in all its different forms. Along with the films there will be opportunities to discuss and plan how we can make Leeds a better place to cycle in. After the films there will be a short tour of cycling hotspots in Headingley, councillors and MPs will be invited to join us to see for themselves the perils and joys of cycling around Leeds.

Appeal: Distinctive Bike, Leeds City Centre

Leeds’ City Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) is appealing for information
to trace the owner of a distinctive bicycle found in the city centre recently.

The bike is made up of various parts, including a Reebok altitude frame
with Carrerra handlebars and gold-coloured Carrerra suspension forksm,
an Apollo seat, and front and rear disc brakes.

Do you own this bike?

It was recently seized on suspicion of being stolen and since then officers have been making enquiries to trace its owner.

Anyone with information is asked to contact PCSO Emma Moran at the City NPT via 0113 241301.

Cycle Parking at Leeds City Station

On 4th January 2010 the cycle parking by the rotunda at Leeds City Station is scheduled to close to make way for the start of construction of the new Cycle Point. On that date, please do not leave your bike there as it will be removed. While construction work is going on, use the cycle parking on Platform 1 (additional space has been provided there) or on the short stay car park instead. The Cycle Point, with secure space for 300 bicycles, will open in May 2010.

Driver jailed for Wakefield cyclist death

A lorry driver who dumped a bicycle after a fatal crash with a cyclist has been jailed for two years.

Andrew Stubbs, 41, of Bicester, Oxfordshire, was sentenced at Leeds Crown Court for knocking over Anthony Spink in Wakefield, West Yorkshire.

He had dumped 41-year-old Mr Spink’s bicycle to cover up the crash, which happened in July 2007.
